The Past, Present, and Future of Chalk

Remember drawing with sidewalk chalk as a child? The liberating feeling of coloring on the street, getting dusty, turning lines into games, and then watching the rain wash it all away. Get ready to conjure that feeling again.

Join Liza Fishbone of Chalk Riot in a workshop on art and impermanence. We'll travel through time and explore the origins of street painting, discuss the state of public art today, and glimpse into our vision for the chalk art of the future. You'll learn the tools and techniques of street painting and have an opportunity to try it for yourself on a public chalk mural!

Facilitator: Liza Fishbone

Imagine a world where animated flowers sway on cool-colored hills, trees pulse with light, drifting clouds smile and whisper secrets. Curious creatures cuddle, dangling from branches. You giggle and frolic through furry fields of grass, communicating with one another through dance.

This is what the inside of Liza Fishbone’s mind looks like. She creates her own utopia; a reality based on the fusion of places she’s travelled, walking amongst the trees, fairy tales, and growing up in household of artists, musicians, and storytellers. It was earning a BFA in Fashion Design from Syracuse University where she started working in 3D. There, she surrounded herself with fabrics, design, and dove deep into the world of future fashion and fashion technology.

Fishbone’s current work is primarily focused on exploring Space and Home. Through interactive play spaces, painting, and chalk, she invites the viewer to to be overtaken by the worlds she creates. To explore the feeling of belonging one place and many places simultaneously, a surreal universe that challenges people to question their reality, interact with one another, and rediscover their sense of childlike wonder.

She is the creator of The Moon Puppies' psychedelic performance troupe. Fishbone frequently gets down and dirty with Chalk Riot, murals with On The Wall Productions, and works with Art Seen Alliance. She is currently based out of Austin, TX.
