Embrace Unlearning: How Changing Our Language Can Reframe Our World

In design and tech, we are often careless about our language. We use terms like 'master', 'whitelist' and 'war room' despite their connotations, history, and impact. While we've made some progress what's acceptable, there are still a lot of terms and phrases we use everyday that are actually hurtful or discriminatory. And even if we know about them, we often don't know how to establish better language on our team.

While this may not seem like a huge deal, the language we use shapes our reality and strongly affects inclusion, diversity, and belonging in teams and organizations. Are you and your team intentional about the language you use around your (virtual) office? Or have you found yourself in situations where you wanted to speak up about a phrase but didn't know how to address the issue well?

Join Jannis Hegenwald and for a virtual discussion about the subtle ways language shapes our work and our world. The two will share common misuses of language and tactics on how to develop a discourse around language on your team. They will dive into how they're bringing stakeholders to the virtual table and how they've improved their team health through better language.

Whether you are an individual contributor or a manager, you will learn effective, collaborative techniques to stop being a a consumer of language and instead become an active shaper of language.
