Designing Outside of the Margins: Creating in the Age of Black Girl Magic

Designing Outside of the Margins: Creating in the Age of Black Girl Magic uncovers the complex dialogues related to the intersections of being Black, a woman, and a designer . The event highlights the work of Black women whose aesthetics and common goals challenge Eurocentric methodologies of design , while focusing on identity, afrofuturism, and the resistance of Black women designers. The history of the design world shows the marginalization of Black women designers and despite the setback, their resistance has broadened the definition of design and popularized nontraditional design platforms (i.e.: hair design , nail art designing ) . In the event we will discuss how Black women and design establishments can work together to build boundless capacities and “magic” within the design world.
